This is a SNOWsational sensory activity for kids. During a recent snow storm, we couldn’t get outside the first day because of the dangerous weather conditions so I thought why not bring the snow indoors! The texture of snow and cold feel makes it a perfect sensory play activity for kids. Don’t worry if you don’t have snow, you could always use a snow cone machine to make snow. This is how to do snow painting!
Materials Needed:
- Bowl (or any container)
- Snow
- Paint
- Paint Brushes
How To Do Snow Painting:
I made my own watercolor paint. Poured 1-2 tablespoons of paint into a cup and mix with water for the perfect watercolor paint.
Gather the snow into a container.
We scooped the snow into another container and then my son would add more when he needed a “clean” surface to paint on.
Use a paintbrush to paint the snow.
My son’s own creativity usually drives our activities. He decided to add snow to the paint cup and we talked about how snow melts. It’s fun to see what they come up with during an activity!
We ended up with a pretty neat watercolor snow painting!
Other Snow Painting Ideas:
- Use a muffin pan and let kids paint pretend cupcakes.
- Use cookie cutters to shape the snow.
- Hide small items in the snow and let the child find them.
I hope you get a chance to try this fun, SNOWSATIONAL activity for kids!
Great fun. We don’t get too much snow here in England, but we’ve had fun doing this a few times.
Thanks, Wendy! It was fun and actually entertained my toddler for a little bit which is hard to do! :)
oh. This looks like it was a lot of fun. We don’t get much snow in Dallas, but I am headed East soon to visit my God kids and this will come in handy.
Yes, you should give it a try – lots of fun! Thanks, Simi!
I love this! I’m totally doing this tonight when I get off work with my boys. They will love it, thank-you!
Oh yay – love to hear you found it useful! I hope your boys enjoy it! Kept my little guy entertained for a little bit – maybe it will give you a few moments of peace too! ;)
You are so creative!! I love this idea! Your kids always look like they have so much fun! I wish we had snow here to try this.

Awww Dominique you’re too kind! I try to find (easy) things to do in the winter but it definitely doesn’t always go smoothly! lol. My 3-year-old is hard to entertain indoors – he’s incredibly active! In the summer, I take them outdoors as much as possible. :)
Oh my goodness, what a fun idea! Plus, not as cold – ha :)
Thank you! So true – definitely not as cold!
This looks like a lot of fun! You could also put it in ketchup-type squeeze bottles and have them squirt designs in the snow. I saw a friend do something like this but I thought she’d used food coloring and I was wondering if it stained. This is a much better idea!
That’s a great idea – my toddler would love to squeeze the paint!
